“DOCTOR’S FARM” is situated on the banks of the river KUNDALIKA and is about 15 acres (Roughly 6,50,000 sq ft.) , in extent. Almost 1500 feet of the land abuts the river. The panoramic view of the river extends to about 7 kms. Situated as it is, between the BHIRA DAM and the KOLAD DAM , the waters of the KUNDALIKA,are very tranquil and Peaceful. “DOCTOR’S FARM” being ensconced between thickly forested hills all around, can thus qualify to be a Nature lover’s Paradise. It is certainly not a place of luxury. It is basically a farmhouse, and should not be misconstrued as a resort. Basic amenities are certainly provided, but no luxuries can be expected.
NATURE : “DOCTOR’S FARM” being situated in a sparsely populated area,devoid of Industrialisation and unscrupulous Commercialisation has the added advantage of literally being in The lap of nature. The wide variety of birds and animals enriching the farm, by their presence, is nothing short of amazing - That too, a mere 2 ½ hour’s drive from one of the most polluted cities of the world i.e. Mumbai. The birds sighted at the farm and its environs are Fish Kite , Vulture, Owl, Kingfisher, Peacock , Hornbill , Woodpecker , Bee-Eater, Drongo, Bulbul, Hawk, Egrets, Parrots, Mynahs, Wild Fowl, Wild Ducks, Tailor Birds, Weaver Birds, Bats, Scissor Tails, apart from, of course, Crows and Ravens. Amazingly, migratory ducks from Central Asia, choose to make the Kundalika their abode between the months of November and March.
“DOCTOR’S FARM” can also boast of a varied variety of animals visiting the farm. Wild Boar, Hare Barking Deer and Mongoose are very frequently sighted. Fox, Panther, Hyena and even Tiger, have been rarely sighted. Although s nakes and scorpions abound, they rarely interact with humans, if left to themselves.
ACTIVITIES AT THE FARM:
“DOCTOR’S FARM” is mainly a horticultural farm, with about 5000 trees growing in its 15 acres. Mango, Cashew, Coconut and
Teak, are its mainstay. However, Breadfruit ,
Jackfruit , Betel Nut , Chickoo, Lemon, Guava, Mulberry, Pineapple, Banana, Papaya and Kokum have a sizeable presence. Floriculture is also given importance, with Gladiolus, Orchids, Anthorium and Roses, given pride of place. Cinnamon, Pepper and Cloves make up the rest. Though organic farming is the mainstay, as far as inputs, are concerned, chemical pesticides are presently in use. A guide, is at all times available, to
show our guests around the farm. A walk around the farm could be a very highly entertaining and educative experience,
especially for children of the age group of 5 to 12 years, as much of what is explained, is part of their curriculum in Botany. The nuances of conservation of water, terracing of land to prevent soil erosion, grafting
of plants, the benefits of using fertilizers, the various pests affecting trees and their fruits, and the strategies developed to combat it, is thoroughly explained.
Note:Plucking of flowers and fruits, is strictly forbidden,and the penalties imposed are severe. However, interested persons, are free to purchase items on sale.
WHAT TO DO:
At dawn or in the evening, when the birds are most cheerful, “DOCTOR’S FARM” could be a bird watcher’s delight. Again,
boating and fishing are pleasurable activities carried out early morning or evening, when the climate is most accom-
modating. It is also the right time for a walk around the farm. Around
11:00 am is the right time for a dip in the
pool and to sit under the artificial waterfall.Of course, from mid June to mid October, one can
enjoy the 4 natural waterfalls, barely 1 ½ kms from “DOCTOR’S
FARM”. Outdoor games like cricket, football, throw ball,badminton and basketball could be played in a 6000 sq.ft.playground. Indoor games like chess, carom, cards and darts are also available.
(1) Swimming in the river is discouraged, as although the river is very tranquil, it is also very deep. Life jackets are to be compulsorily worn, if one goes boating.
(2) The water in the swimming pool is directly pumped in from the river. There is
no filtration, chlorination or recycling of the water.
The excess water is allowed to overflow from the pool, back to the river. It is a continuous flow of fresh river water.
(3) Fishing tools provided are simple; consisting
of a rod and line, with dough as bait. Serious anglers are expected to bring their own fishing gear.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES : Expert cooks concoct delicious veg and non-veg dishes, in separate kitchens, and is served in a large 1500 sq.ft. hall. Music and dancing is enjoyed by the youngsters. Food is buffet in nature and is served in the lower hall. However, the upper terrace of 1500 sq. ft. is occupied in the late evenings and night,by those who wish to soak in the serenity, and the magic of
the celestial world. It is amazing to see our firmament, without the blinkers of skyscrapers and pollution.
The day begins at 7:00 am with morning tea/coffee. It is followed by breakfast at around 8:30 am. Breakfast would consist of 2 items, along with tea/coffee.
For example, it could be Kanda Poha with Batata Wada, or Egg Bhurji Pav, with Missal Pav, or Idli Sambar with Medu Wada, etc.
Lunch follows at 1:30 pm with chapatti, dal, rice, 2 vegetables, salad, pickles and a sweet dish. One non vegetarian dish,
usually chicken, is also part of the menu. Those who wish to have
a late lunch or dinner need not worry. The food will be warmed and served to them when they want it.
Then follows evening tea/coffee with biscuits .
Starters, (virtually a mini meal), follows at around 8:00 pm with Chicken, Paneer, Mushroom, American Golden Corn and Kabuli Chana to nibble on while you have your drinks.
Dinner would be similar to lunch, except that
no item served for lunch, would be repeated,
except for rice and chapatti. It must be noted here, that all meals including starters, are absolutely unlimited, and at no extra cost. The
last call for dinner, would be 12:00 midnight, after which the
food would be placed on the tables, but the staff would retire for the night. Soft Drinks, Soda and Mild Kingfisher beer is available with us, however guests are expected to carry their own stock of hard liquor.
There are different types of accommodation to suit different needs.
Note: There is no Air Conditioner or Television in any of the rooms on the farm; however the T.V installed in the hall may be watched by those interested. In case of power failure, we have a diesel generator, to take care of our needs.
Rooms: Each room has an attached bathroom with English Each room has an attached bathroom with English toilet and a shower. There are 2 double beds in each room , and is suitable for a couple and 2-3 children. There are 4 such rooms. The rooms have fan,exhaust fan, tubelight and a 40’ X 10’ balcony outside the room.
Bungalows: Two dome shaped bungalows exist with 2 bedrooms with attached bathroom and toilet in each room. Each bungalow has a mezzanine and a hall, but there are no bathrooms or toilets here. The total accommodation in each bungalow, is for 15 adults. It is suitable for large extended families. Dormitories: There are 2 large dormitories, with 25 beds in each dormitory.Four latrines and 3 bathrooms with shower are just 10 feet away, for the use of the occupants of the dormitories. It is suitable for office groups.
Bamboo Cottages: “DOCTOR’S FARM” has 3 bamboo cottages. Each bamboo cottage has 2 raised platforms on which are laid beddings and pillows . Each bamboo cottage has fans, lights and curtains for privacy. A 7’ x 40’ gallery is outside the bamboo cottages.Each cottage can accommodate upto 12 persons. The 4 bathrooms and 4 latrines for the use of its occupants are 40’ away. Suitable for college students and low budget picnickers.
